‘My work is about me and has been mostly inspired by my own childhood experiences. I was the little girl who wanted to be the prima ballerina and later I was the girl who wanted to be the greatest swimmer. I never got far in either but discovered many links between the two and I explore this through art. I have a love for all of the aspects of each and frequently recall the experiences, now part of my imagination.
Over the years I have learnt the academic techniques within drawing and painting but have chosen to let go and return to the spontaneous which I find more liberating. I find it allows a continuous flow in my work. I use the techniques of print, mostly collograph and screenprint, combined with painting and drawing. My work is mostly monotype, which makes each one more precious for me. Each piece is made up of many layers and through print I found my inspiring textures. Each time the paper is lifted from the plate it is always a surprise and this is what gives me the greatest satisfaction.
The figures I can include are without faces, as they can have many names, and in print I can move them into different situations and create very different environments. For me simplicity and spontaneity are so important and go hand in hand. I love to explore colour and line and hope that the combination of the figurative and the abstract make my compositions appealing.’
