The work for me exists on two levels; idea/concept and process. The initial trigger, the impetus to make art, the forming of concepts and idea, followed by the realisation of a finished piece i.e. when that idea has gone through a creative technical process. Here the idea can change tack and sometimes becomes dominated by a celebration of mark, sensory concerns, compositional equations, the layering of multi plate imagery, and/or the provocative nature of colour. At this stage the piece begins to exist outside the initial inspiration. It is an organic transition. The idea that the initial vision can become something else through technique and process is something which is of great interest to me.
My work takes as its source the concept of ‘home’, a notion common to humans, a shared aspiration. I look at many levels within this concept: ranging from basic architectural structures, physical space, composition and form, through to conceptual notions of love, solace and protection. Also contrasting the positive with the negative connotations of human nature, the sinister element of its secrecies. My work has examined and dealt with, social placing, ownership and materialism, the idea of ones identity being defined by ones home. I see the ‘house’ as a metaphor for a flawed human condition. For me, the exercise of making the work is a self-perpetuating process. Through a carefully considered dialogue with material, I imbue the work with expressive and emotional qualities allowing me to communicate a concept on a fundamental level to the viewer. I prefer to work medium to large format using up to six plates in a given image. Currently, I am concentrating on composition and colour, using digital technology in conjunction with intaglio techniques.
