Artist's Statement
These etchings are based on botanical research that I have been undertaking. This series consists of images around the idea of gardens, ideas of pruning, regrowth, grafting and forced training of various plants.
Emerging from layers of creams and greys are details of schematic botanical references and relate to themes such as growth, fragility, dependence, and how these may relate to our inner world.
Master printmaker Chul Soo Lee is widely recognized as one of the foremost contemporary Korean artists for his woodcut prints. Mr. Lee was born in Seoul in 1954 and at an early age, without formal training, began his artistic studies. His first major exhibition was in Seoul in 1981 and has continued to exhibit his work in Korea, Germany, Switzerland, the United States. This is the artist's first show in Ireland. Respected for his work as Min-Jung Art Movement (Democratic Art Movement for People) printmaker in the 1980's, Lee's focus shifted away from the middle of political struggle to the countryside in 1987. Lee Chul Soo now lives with his wife on a small rice farm in rural Korea. He grows most of his own food, and fills his days with farming, writing poetry and making prints by hand in the traditional way.

I aim to create harmonious compositions from the uncluttered spaces of public buildings, attempting to capture the effects of light and atmosphere with the use of etching and aquatint.
