| These etchings are based on botanical research that I have been undertaking. This series consists of images around the idea of gardens, ideas of pruning, regrowth, grafting and forced training of various plants. Emerging from layers of creams and greys are details of schematic botanical references and relate to themes such as growth, fragility, dependence, and how these may relate to our inner world. Elaine's ‘Trace’ series was commissioned by the Office of Public Works for the National Library of Ireland.
The Series comprises of a series of large-scale etchings using interconnected images containing maps, archaeological references, language, text and history. These delicate images evoke the fragility, heritage and knowledge of the Collection.
The etching and carborundum prints are based on documents and notes found in the archives of the National Library. Emerging from their layers of grey and earthy tones are fragmentary details referencing aspects of the Collection, and relate to themes such as mapping and passing, and allude to a sense of history that is both personal and universal.
These works have been exhibited in The Ashford Gallery, RHA, along with a smaller series of works entitled ‘Pages’.
My work is represented in many of the significant Collections including RHA Collection, KPMG, Allied Irish Banks, DIT, Rohcon Ltd, Hilton Hotel, Jurys Hotel Group, Office of Public Works, Dublin Castle and Government Buildings. I have been a regular recipient of Arts Council Awards.
