Born in Dublin in 1946, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and the Dun Laoghaire School of Art, but has lived and worked in Milan since the 1980s. Frequent visits to Japan have notably influenced his working methods and materials, instanced in a series of large-scale works on handmade washi paper, which he produced in western Japan in 1999. His works typically involve large fields of quiet colours, punctuated and divided by sparse, irregular geometric lines. He has exhibited regularly in Dublin, London, Milan and Tokyo. Solo exhibitions include the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2001); Crawford Municipal Gallery, Cork (2001); Ormeau Baths, Belfast (2000); Limerick City Gallery (2000); Mitaka City Art Foundation, Tokyo (1999); and Itami City Museum of Art, Osaka (1998); Hunt Museum, Limerick (1997); Orchard Gallery, Derry (1995); and Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle (1995). He has recently participated in group shows at the Berkeley Art Museum, California and the Drawing Center, New York. He has received awards from the Arts Council and the Department of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Palette D'Or at the 1986 international painting festival in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, and the Pollock Krasner Award in 1996.
