an exhibition of new works by Irish artist Ruth ODonnell and Swedish artist Eva Grytt.
Inspired by the Persian poem ‘The Conference of the Birds’. - its symbolism and imagery; O’Donnell references the many different interpretations and symbols in the tale of enlightenment.
Grytt’s work looks closely at nature but instead of simply depicting what she sees, she instead illustrates the feelings and shape they evoke.
The two distinct styles of these artists’ work complement each other greatly one looking at the detail in everything the other the essence but both striving to portray the truth in what they portray.
Exhibition ends March 28th.
Curated by Oliver Dowling, John Graham, and Margaret O’Brien
Concerned with the unseen, overlooked, or hidden, Invisible presents the work of 28 artists in 11 locations around Dublin City. Tapping into our seemingly innate desire to look for the truth beyond appearances, the exhibition creates a trail of diverse artworks across a number of locations and events. Launching at the Original Print Gallery on Thursday March 11th, artist works here include Gerard Byrne, Martina Cleary, Catherine Hehir, Sean Lynch, Peter Maybury, Jim McCracken, Isabel Nolan, Naomi Sex and Manuel Vermeire.

This exhibition is the result of an exciting collaboration between 20 or Ireland's leading printmakers and graphic designers.

Each designer was paired with a printmaker working to the theme Tomorrow is Today

The exhibition features work from Debora Ando, Oran Day / Janine Davidson, Conor Nolan / Lynda Devenney, Bob Gray / Emma Finucane, Ronan Devlin / Hugh McCarthy, Noel Greene / Louise Meade, Paul McBride / David McGinn, Aiden Grennelle / Louise Peat, Liz Healy / Mick Timmins, Dara Ní Bheacháin / Katherine van Uytrecht and Daniel O’Donoghue.

This exhibition is one of the highlights of the Design Week 2009 in association with Bombay Sapphire.
We currently have a group exhibition on in the gallery of works by leading Irish and international artists.

and then hard as it is to believe it will be Christmas and we will have an exciting array of gift ideas in our Christmas exhibition!
The fun and vibrant works of Niamh Moran celebrate all that is great about Irish summers (when the sun shines in any case). These can be viewed along side, beautifully drawn monotypes by Piia Rossi and exquiste etchings by Jean Bardon.
We also have strong expressive monoprints by Nickie Hayden teamed with master printmaker and Aosdana member James McCreary's mezzotints.
For those of you that prefer more abstact works we have strong graphic works from Mary A Fitzgerald and Tom Phelan.
Wicklow has given Bob Lynn a rich store of subject matter, which he has drawn on for many years. His work inhabits a world somewhere between figuration and abstraction: objects and things are strongly suggested if not actually depicted. The artist is primarily concerned with evoking feelings rather than depicting/describing physical things; he does this very successfully through his bold use of colour. "Sometimes the use of descriptive local colours do not fully express the original sensation, there is a need and necessity to use colour in an expressive or evocative way as opposed to descriptive or journalistic way."
An exhibition of prints and paintings by Margaret McLoughlin.
April 16th to May 9th
This new body of work by Margaret McLoughlin conjures up the isolation and desolation of a forest landscape. The power of the elements is seen in the fallen trees, the broken branches and the windswept plain. This constant natural regeneration bears witness to the passing of time. Remnants of man-made structures evoke our fleeting presence on the landscape. McLoughlin uses carborundum and drypoint to convey the rich colours and textures of this wet peaty landscape. In a new departure for McLoughlin, this exhibition includes oils on canvas affording the artist a new domain to explore.
March 12th to April 3rd
John Kelly explores Australian history and art history through idiosyncratic symbols and deconstructions.
Renowned for his paintings of Dobell's cows; the cow imagery stems from a specific story about William Dobell's employment in WWII. Dobell was one of a group of artists who made papier-mâché cows for strategic placement around defence bases. The desire was to have Japanese pilots believe the area was nothing but benign farmland. In his work, Kelly tracks these lost works by Dobell, inserting them into Australian art history.
Kelly also pays hommage to another Australian artist Sidney Nolan, as can be seen in ‘Nolan’s Light’ left.
In more recent work, Kelly has focused on branding and logos. Aroused by the endeavor of the Australian Council for the Arts to brand the arts through their logo depicting a kangaroo and sun. Kelly is concerned about Australian culture, in the larger sense, blindly adopting the criteria of others – prescriptive, doctrinal approaches seemingly adopted with little thought or debate.
The Black Church Print Studio presents ‘Symmetry’ at the Original Print Gallery from 13th February to 7th March.
This exhibition was co-selected by artist, Rhona Byrne and graphic designer, Oran Day.
The term ‘symmetry’ has many meanings and applications; within the fields of visual culture, philosophy and physics the term opens up very different discussions. Within the world of printmaking however, there has always been a special connection between the idea of symmetry and the particular duality that exists in the reflective relationship between the print and the plate.
Black Church Print Studio invited submissions from Irish and international artists working in a wide range of media who address and respond to symmetry and its many meanings. This exhibition will include print, sculpture, and video installation works. Image left, digital print by Corey Naughton
Now in its fourth year the Temple Bar Trad Fest has become a must on the Irish Trad circuit. The heart of the capital is quite literally transformed into a trad lover’s paradise, with the cream of traditional entertainers from around the globe filling the cobbled streets with “craic agus ceol.” To coincide with this great celebration the Original Print Gallery will pay it's own hommage to traditional music. With artists such as Jim Butler (left) capturing the atmosphere of a 'session', Tighe ODonoghue celebrating the musical instruments and other artists inspired by the music itself, visitors to Dublin's Cultural Quarter can enjoy a feast for all their senses.
A mix of established and emerging artists work - this group exhibition showcases the very best of etching, drypoint, lithography, carborundum, screen and monoprints.

This year ICAD [Irish Creative Advertisers and Designer]
turns 50 which is a huge achievement and a tribute to the strength of the Irish creative industries.

As well as their usual mission statement 'to foster, promote and reward creative excellence', this year they celebrate it.

As part of the celebration 50 of Ireland's leading creatives from advertising, design and their associated crafts were invited to produce an original piece of work illustrating their big idea!
‘No Man’s Land’ is a fictional designate, that describes an area not assigned to any owner, an area that clearly does not belong to any subject.
Here at the Original Print Gallery, in a unique participatory art installation/ intervention Finnish artist Piia Rossi and a heterogeneous selection of invited collaborators will explore their differing perspectives of a utopian or personal terrain. Their map/vista will be drawn, printed, stamped directly onto the blank canvas of gallery’s walls. The work will be continually evolving over the week, as the collaborators, design, play with and mark the ‘terra incognito.’ The exhibition aims to explore the space between artists and audience, between public and private space and between the emotional and topographical landscapes.

Rossi, will start the project by drawing a single longitudinal line around the gallery walls, staking the territory of “No Man’s Land”, she will also be on hand each day of the intervention to facilitate demonstrations of the print making techniques of etching, relief prints, monoprint, screenprint and stamping. Her collaborators gathered from the fields of architecture, urban planning, design and illustration will be uniquely able to respond to the surrounding ‘No Man’s Land” that is the gallery site.
The Original Print Gallery is offering you A wonderful opportunity to create your own piece of art this Culture Night. Esteemed printmaker and participatory facilitator - Piia Rossi, will be leading small groups of visitors in a printmaking project from 6 - 8pm to coincide with Dublin's 3rd Annual Culture Night. There will also be a DJ and refreshments. We hope you can make it.
Node: a central point of a network of operation, from this starting point many connections and associations evolve establishing vital links for mutual benefit.

Organised by Black Church Print Studio this group show of the National Print Studio Network artists was curated by Raymond Henshaw and congratulations to Struan Hamilton who won the Black Church Prize, adjudicated by Dr. Michael Ryan, Director, Chester Beatty Library.

description
This group show exhibits Irish and International artists’ response to the landscape, figuratively and in the abstract. In the intimate scale of James McCreary jewel like mezzotints to the bold geometric work of Michael ODonovan left. The minimal, heavily textured carborundum of Maria Simonds - Gooding is perfectly complemented by the natural hues of Frieda Meaney’s Map Flight. Two recent editions to the Gallery’s portfolio - Larry Welo and Norman Stiff (below) are also included in this exhibition. Welo’s work evokes an atmosphere in the motionless landscapes that draw the viewer in, in search of what is over the horizon or round the corner. Stiff’s superb draftsmanship is most evident in his depiction of the traditional Irish stone fences and buildings.
This show runs until September 6th and will be followed by Node which showcases works by member of the National Print Studio Network, organised by Black Church Print Studio.
IRISH TIMES REVIEW
August 20, 2008
Visual Arts
Aidan Dunne
JUST ENDED at the Original Print Gallery, Louise Meade’s Dark Night was an intense, quietly persuasive show. Her etchings and monoprints referred to landscape and, in at least one instance, to a single, tulip-like flower, but in them the physical world and its objects hovered always at the edge of visibility, never quite becoming material. The surfaces looked as if they had evolved gradually through a process of addition and erasure, and were infused with subtle colour and the faint traces of forms and marks made by the jagged bite of acid, or methodical cross-hatching and more fluid, relaxed lines.
Meade, an accomplished printmaker, managed to generate a sense of space, a space that was at once actual and dreamlike. It had atmosphere – weather, temperature, rawness – but also a meditative quality, a distance from immediate actuality. An art of subtle nuances and inflections, it was nonetheless powerful and vivid.

The Original Print Gallery has always prided itself on its commitment to showing new Irish and International printmakers. +1 is an artist led exhibition featuring the works of 10 International artists.

For the +1 show, five European based gallery artists were asked to choose an artist to show with them. The five printmakers: Alexander Befelein, Börje Almqvist, Sandrine Pèron, Christian Bozon and Simone Aaberg Kaern each picked an artist. The impetus for their choice is not transparent; sometimes the chosen artists are studio colleagues, or partners, sometimes a younger artist whose work they admire, occasionally their curatorial choice seems more elusive and the viewer is left to unravel the connections themselves. What is obvious however is the quality, the diversity and the playfulness of these printmakers from Germany, Spain, Sweden, France and Denmark.
Group exhibition of etchings, monoprints, mezzotints and carborundums by highly acclaimed Irish & International artists.
From beautiful loose and uplifting skyscapes of Ivan Frew to the stark, graphic Burren inspired etchings of Johnny Bugler (left).
The title is from Goya’s work in Album G/57
“They fly and fly. Fiesta in the air. The Butterfly Bull.”
It’s always difficult, not to say dangerous on occasion, to attempt to unravel the inspiration of an artist, as they explore a theme. Sometimes, if we are lucky, we can catch a glimpse of their preoccupations. We see hints of the precursors, the books, the mythology, the rituals that have indelibly etched their traces in the artist’s mind. However we can never be sure and in the end are just left wide eyed in the presence of the artwork. What we can clearly see is the dedication the artist has shown in exploring these.
The works being shown here at the Original Print Gallery are the fruit of the many residencies that Frieda Meaney has undertaken in Spain over the last decade. It is a country, whose culture has got under the artist’s skin. One aspect in particular of this nation’s culture has taken hold – that of the art of bullfighting.
Initially appalled by this ancient, some would say arcane practice, as she researched further the artist found a grudging respect developing. From Minoan Crete, to the Catal Huyuk Shrine in Turkey to Goya’s work in album G/ 57artists have seen a connection between the bull’s sacrifice and regeneration. Freida grew to be fascinated by the overlay of myth and ritual and the elaborate choreography and theatrics of matador and bull.
A fresh palatte for a fresh year! Beautiful, graphic works by Felim Egan; delicate, botanical etchings by Marta Wakula, and bold, vivid monoprints by Michael O'Donovan
Black Church Print Studio’s latest exhibition Defining Space, curated by Dr. Hugh Campbell, UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering and co-selected with Felicity Clear opens Thursday, February 21st.
The phrase ‘defining space’ is intended to capture the many ambiguities and tensions inherent in the ways in which space – as a term and a property - is variously used in different fields. Space can be defined in very concrete and in very abstract ways. It can be social, political, spiritual and cultural as much as physical.

This December the Original Print Gallery is proud to host an exhibition of work celebrating the mastery and richness of printmaking both in Ireland and Internationally.
A Christmas Chorus is a paean exemplifying the skill and variety of techniques and subjects that entrance a printmaker. Work on view includes the painterly, melancholic abstract screenprints of Stephen Vaughan, the sepia toned photogravures of Istanbul by Mats Wilheimson, and Felim Egan’s subtly restrained aquatints, James McCreary’s lushly elegiac mezzotints and Anita Klein’s joyous woodcuts.
Additionally, the Original Print Gallery gives you a chance to win a stunning print worth over €200. Each day for 12 days the Original Print Gallery will be revealing a clue to a well known Christmas carol on the gallery website. (Ninth clue is the print featured here). Those who guess the title correctly will be entered into a draw to win a beautiful original print.
Open 7 days a week all year round, the Original Print Gallery will also remain open until 8pm on Wednesday and Thursdays in December, serving mulled wine and mince pies.
Drop in to discover truly imaginative and original gifts for loved ones, colleagues or just a well deserved treat for yourself.
Untitled on/off by Place, Michael C.
For On/Off, curators Maxalot(Barcelona/Amsterdam) invited leading graphic studio Build (London), to collaborate with industrial architects Commonwealth (New York), for a 2d-3d face off using cutting edge graphic software versus computer-numerically controlled industrial design technology.
The exhibition combines printed graphics by Build, combined with industrial 3D deconstructions by Commonwealth in a series of unique objects d’art.
Printed vectors bleed into 3-dimensional surfaces as projected lines etched into the Corian frames, which house them. After hugely successful shows in New York and London the exhibition now travels to the Original Print Gallery as part of Dublin’s Design Week 2007.
Lina Nordenström’s first solo show in Ireland showcases the range and variety of this Swedish artist’s talents. In her prints, book objects and maps, there is an exquisite craftsmanship and considered restraint. Her palate is muted, and no superfluous detail escapes. The poet Archibald McLeish famously claimed, “A poem should not mean / But be”, similarly Nordenström’s work is resistant to theorising, quite simply she takes the idea of an item like a map, or a book and pares it down to its essentials, and in so doing creates a beautiful object. October 4th to 26th
Friday September 14th 2007 Where better to experience Culture Night 2007 than in Dublin's designated cultural quarter Temple Bar; we at the Original Print Gallery have some exciting activities planned for your enjoyment on the night and will remain open until 10pm to ensure we are as accessible as possible.
I hope you can join us for what sure to prove a highly enjoyable evening. What's planned...? Print Demonstration by leading Irish artist Margaret McLoughlin at 6.30pm
Monotype and monoprinta demonstration by Brazilian artist and esteemed colleague Debora Ando at 8pm
Refreshments will be served all evening with an atmospheric DJ set from 8.30! We will be conducting our 'Guess the technique' competition this year again so if you've forgotten the difference between an etching and a lithograph check out the 'What is an original print' link left. The Salon Show continues until September 30th.
From Friday 7th until Sunday 30th of September, Black Church Print Studio celebrates our inaugural Salon Show at the Original Print Gallery, Temple Bar, as part of our 25 year anniversary exhibition schedule. This exhibition will preview on Thursday 6th September at 6pm.
Selected by Ann Hodge, Curator of Prints and Drawings from the National Gallery of Ireland and Jan de Fouw, founder member of the Black Church Print Studio. The salon show will consist of approximately 50 works by 20 artists and is a showcase of work produced by current members at the Black Church Print Studio. The subject matter varies from representational to abstract to photographic to digital video work. The result is an elegant and eclectic show that represents the aesthetic of the Black Church Print Studio. Next exhibition Lina Nordenström's Of books, boxes, print and drawings
A mixed and excited array of the very best of Irish and International artists work.
A truly summer theme is echoed in the works of Anita Klein (left), Colin Martin and Niamh Moran.
With Niall Naessens, Jackie Stanley, Sean Hillen and Mary Canty giving their individual perspective and talents of the Irish landscape.
We also have works by David Sully and the abstract work of Michael Timmins.
Paradigms is a two person show at the Original Print Gallery featuring the works of emerging Belgian artist Ronald Ceuppens (born 1970 Mechelen, Belgium) and the Irish painter and printmaker Louise Peat.
Although the two artists work seems very different; Peat’s works are large silkscreen printed swirls and subtle layering of colour, Ceuppen’s smaller mixed media works incorporate elements of etching, collage, and occasionally small circular structures, what they both share is an ability to powerfully and emotively communicate the artist’s journey.
An exhibition of work by Irish artist Niamh Moran
and South African artist

What both these artists capture in their prints is a joyous moment when dancers pirouette, mermaids sunbathe and for a moment the world seems temporarily visible through the glow of childhood memories. Exhibition ends May 19th Next exhibition Paradigms opens Friday 25th of May

November 3rd - 24th, 2006

The works featured in this exhibition are about moments captured in the sombre west Wicklow winter landscape. A particular mood, weather or atmosphere, is caught just as the light changes, the snow melts or the evening falls. The artist’s use of the carborundum technique allows for a fresh directness, and the etching marks pick up the subtle and evocative shifts of mood.
In this exhibition artists Lynda Devenney and Emma Finucane, present an installation of silkscreen, digital printing and video work representing an enquiry into the idea of 'place'.
Place is a word that is used to describe our relationship to the world around us. This, and the way we communicate with others ultimately determine the quality of our lives.

inspired by the maritime environment and a little strip of marshland near the artist’s home in Cork.
Very minimal and evocative the artist employs the simplicity and power of colour to express the tensions, emotions and many qualities of
his surroundings.
The work is a response to the artist’s visual and emotional experiences of this landscape, through the work the artist has endeavoured to produce work where vision
transcends reality.

Master printmaker Chul Soo Lee is widely recognized as one of the foremost contemporary Korean artists for his woodcut prints.
Mr. Lee was born in Seoul in 1954 and at an early age, without formal training, began his artistic studies. His first major exhibition was in Seoul in 1981 and he has continued to exhibit his work in Korea, Germany, Switzerland and the United States. This is the artist's first show in Ireland. The artist's woodcuts, characterized by laconic prose and their graphic minimalism, reflect his life as a farmer, Zen practitioner and poet-artist. His themes express a deep respect for nature, family and a quiet, contemplative way of life. His poems, both visual and verbal, speak to all people. Lee Chul Soo, in his simple forms and words, expresses universal messages that are beyond boundaries or borders. The exhibition will run until October 20th.
The Gallery’s Summer Group Show starts on July 15th and includes the works of Trevor Price, Art Werger, Rica Bando, Hildegard Wilmott and Maria Simonds - Gooding, a mix of images and styles to remind us of holidays past and the fun that is summer! Other artist’s works that will be on exhibition are Dorothy Smith’s abstract landscapes and striking new work by Mary A. Fitzgerald.
Louise Meade’s second solo exhibition at The Original Print Gallery is a natural progression from her previous show, Uncharted Waters. Filament moves from an exploration of external bodies of water – ponds, rivers, oceans – to the internal fluids of our bodies. ‘Forensic’ is a key word here; many of these images are suggestive of tissue and bloodstains, viruses and genetic markers. Such abstract imagery compliments Louise’s delicate style and approach to mark-making. The title, Filament, was chosen carefully for its associations: a single, thin thread; a long strand consisting of similar cells (for example in certain bacteria); also a light-producing element in an incandescent bulb.
A Group Exhibition exhibiting one off prints by Piia Rossi and Niamh Moran (left). Striking aquatints by Alison Pilkington. Vibrant screenprint - woodblocks by Albert Irvin: and an intriguing body of work by Joanna Kidney inspired by notions of land, water, sky and wind, layer textures both in the printing of the images but also through the application of mixed media.
Following on from our recent Show Patrons, the Original Print Gallery, is exhibiting a group show of the finest international and national printmakers. Detailed, atmospheric cityscapes by David Lintine (left), are side by side with abstract Irish countryscapes of James McCreavy (below), figurative work by Colin Martin, next to equestrian imagery by Stephen Lawlor, to name just a few!

In Autumn 2002, Gerard made a five week journey across West Africa. On his travels he was struck by the levels of poverty, the good humour of the people, the vibrant colours of the clothes and the diversity of the landscape. This set of prints is inspired by the visual diary, of photographs and drawings, Gerard kept on his journey. exhibition runs from November 18th –24th admission free
Thursday October 28th until November 16th, 2004
Exhibited are 12 arresting works created by the artist over the last two years Breach(left). Each piece in this exhibition is a social comment, exploring the interaction of man, nature and their shared landscape. Geometric and architectural motifs interplay with a very organic and natural colour palette. The results are large, richly textured and densely layered intaglio prints with an abstract visual language, that challenges the viewer to decipher their meaning.
One of the most famous works of art dealing with the effects of war, Goya’s Disasters of War continue to be inspiration for contemporary artists. Black Church Studio artists were invited to address the theme or war from a contemporary perspective, referring or not to the original series. The works included in this show address many aspects of war including the human cost and its effect on the landscape. Like Goya many artists in the exhibition have chosen to represent war as other than heroic and glorious. Goya’s works were executed exclusively in etching; in contrast many print media are represented by the artists Emma Finucane, Mary A Fitzgerald, Andrew Folan, Grainne Dowling, Margaret Irwin, Margaret McLoughlin, Sinèad O’Reilly, Alison Pilkington and Naomi Sex (left). A percentage of artists’ proceeds from this Exhibition will be donated to Amnesty International. Exhibition runs Sept 23rd – Oct 14th.
As well as a Group Show exhibiting exciting new work by artists such as Lucy Turner (left), Ruth ODonnell, Michael Timmins and Eamon Coleman, the Original Print Gallery is also delighted to present: Knot so Bád: Knot/sew/boat. This show marks the end of a long running project by the artist Keith Kennedy beginning over two years ago, with an idea to build a traditional Irish boat of 3,500 year design known as a coracle and travel in it down the River Boyne. This Kennedy did in August of last year. The works are based on Kennedy's own experiences from the journey and on his research into archaeology, ancient conquests and the relics from forgotten realms. The result is a striking body of work which encapsulates the immense history to the Boyne river and the beauty thereof.
Showcasing the best of Irish and International Printmakers. New Works by Keith Kennedy, Mary A Fitzgerald,Cora Cummins, Hildegard Wilmott (left), Cliona Doyle, Richard Gorman and Lars Nyberg.
The Original Print Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new large and small format one off prints by Kate Betts. This new body of work is concerned with the tension and the duality which the artist feels to be at the heart of all her experiences: Good and evil; yin and yang; the animal and rational self; right brain/left brain function. Whichever way we look at it - mythology, philosophies and science - all reinforce the suspicion: We are split. Yet we strive for some kind of wholeness. All of the prints in the show are unique, one-off works of art. They are hand made and there is no edition. Kate will be giving a talk on her work in the Gallery on Sunday, April 25th at 3pm, the Exhibition runs from April 15th to May 5, 2004.

For this exhibition artists were asked to respond to the title ‘Source’ and to submit work that takes nature and or natural elements as its source or inspiration. The title inspired a variety of responses from members of the Studio resulting in the selection of new work by Kate Betts, Lynda Devenney, Maurita Moore, Louise Peat and Michael Timmins. (part of Lynda Devenney's Tributary installation left). The Gallery will be closed on Sundays and Mondays until further notice.
This body of new work by Margaret McLoughlin has the Wicklow landscape as its source. The artist explores the silent loneliness of the boglands.
In that area there is a strong feeling of being alone in a landscape which can be at once exhilarating, peaceful and yet a bit threatening. The landscape itself constantly changes through light, time of day and weather conditions. These works evoke the fleeting sensation of a moment when colours and textures are half glimpsed before the light changes. (nocturne, left).
The Exhibition runs until Novermber 21 2003.
